Today marks six months that we have been shut down here in California. Yes, we had a short less than two-week opening at the end of July but for many of us that hardly counts. There is no sugar coating it, the road has been long, challenging and uncertain. It truly is the epitome of in limbo.
Definition of in limbo –According to Merriam Webster
1: in a forgotten or ignored place, state, or situation
Let’s start with the forgotten part of the definition. I dare to say no one person wants to be forgotten. Whether it be in terms of your family, amongst work colleagues and or just personal life achievement goals. We all hope that our efforts and endeavors leave a positive impact on our dear ones to remain present both during our time on this planet and beyond.
What about ignored place, state or situation? The synonyms describe it clearly: bypass, disregard, neglect, overlook etc. Not much positivity in that batch. The point of this word play is being in limbo is not a place that builds growth, enrichment and forward reaching. Yet, here we are.
New Conversation
This post is not a statement on whether or not the lockdown is effective. It’s a statement on people need to see future prospective in order to grow, at any age. Something I feel is greatly missing in the conversations around this six-month closure is how to bring individuals of all ages back to a level of personal and career growth. I give an example here.
During this period many of us have been quite disciplined in honing our skills through workshops, online courses and self-study. In addition, to maintaining both exercise and nutrition habits that support aging well. But there comes a point where you say, I need to see some sign that this is NOT a permanent situation.
While we hear a lot about Covid_19 case numbers there is much less focus on the following.
- More than 31 Million Americans are currently claiming unemployment
- In April 1 in 3 Americans did not pay rent and 10-15% reported being housing insecure
- 4 Million American workers lost their health insurance from February through May
- 53%of adults in the United States reported that their mental health has been negatively impacted due to worry and stress over the coronavirus
- Small business employ almost 50% of Americans, new research suggests 38% of businesses state unlikely or only somewhat likely they would open at end of 2020
Take a big breath
It’s overdue time to for leaders, particularly at our state and local levels to give individuals and businesses a time frame. Provide scenarios for a realistic game plan to move forward. Help restore confidence into communities by less fear mongering and more strength promoting.
From a personal perspective a great majority of the population here in California has followed your rules to first not overwhelm the health care system, then to flatten the curve and then to reduce the case numbers and with each time the goal post changes we try to adapt. The longer in limbo goes on the less likely many will be able to regain not only their financial losses but their drive to create, rebuild and contribute with strength and passion.
Discomfort without support = Stress
Discomfort with support = Growth & Development
